Lash Extension Removal:
Why Not to Pick Them Off

Lash extension removal: why not to pick them off

Please do not pick or pull your lash extensions off at home. Each extension is glued to one of your natural lashes, so pulling it can take the natural lash with it. I’m Julia, a lash artist in Vancouver, WA, and if you want your set off, the safe way is to come to me or another lash artist for removal.

Below I explain what goes wrong at home and what to do instead. The quick table shows the main points, and the details follow it. You can also read my guide to how to care for lash extensions.

When you are ready to book, see all my service prices or my guide to lash extension prices in Vancouver, WA.

Situation Do this Avoid this Why
You want them off Ask a lash artist to remove them Picking, pulling or peeling Each extension is glued to a natural lash
An extension looks loose or twisted Leave it and tell your artist at your next refill Tugging at it A pulled extension can take the natural lash with it
Your set looks sparse Book a refill, every 2 to 3 weeks Picking at what is left Extensions shed together with natural lashes, so a set thins out

Home Removal: What Goes Wrong

Every extension is glued to one of your natural lashes. When you pick or pull at it, the force goes into your own lash. People who take extensions off themselves end up pulling out their natural lashes, which is why I say do not remove them at home at all.
I tell clients to keep oil-based products away from their eyes, so I do not recommend oil as a way to loosen extensions at home.
Extensions also shed together with your natural lashes, so a set thins out on its own over time. That is why you refill every 2 to 3 weeks. Read my guide to how long lash extensions last.

What Professional Removal Looks Like

Lash extension removal: what to do and what to avoid

I offer lash extension removal, so you do not have to do it yourself. A professional removal uses a remover made for lash glue, so the extensions come off without pulling on your natural lashes.
Message me to ask how removal works, how long it takes and what it costs, or book a free consultation.
Read my guide on whether lash extensions damage natural lashes and on how to choose a lash artist.

What to Do If You Need Them Off

Do not pick at them. If an extension is loose or twisted, leave it and tell your lash artist at your next refill.

If your eyes become red, swollen or painful, see a doctor. For daily care, see my guide to how to care for lash extensions.
