How to Care for Lash Extensions

How to care for lash extensions: dos and don'ts for the first hours and every day after

Lash extension aftercare is simple, and it works for every style, whether you wear classic, hybrid, volume, or one of my specialty looks. I’m Julia, a lash artist in Vancouver, WA, and the question I hear most often after a first set is simple: how do I take care of my eyelash extensions after my appointment?

Below you will find what to do in the first hours, how to care for your lashes every day, and what to avoid. The quick table shows the basics, and the details follow it. You can also see all my lash extension services in Vancouver, WA on one page.

Good care helps your set last longer, and you can see exactly how long in my guide to how long lash extensions last.

Habit Do Avoid Why
Washing Wash regularly with a lash cleanser Cleansers with oils and fluffy towels Skin oil weakens the bond
Brushing Gently brush with your lash brush Pulling, picking and rubbing Protects your natural lashes
Makeup Oil-free products Mascara and oils near the lash line Oils weaken the bond

The First Hours: Keep Your Lashes Dry

The first hours after your appointment matter most, because the adhesive needs time to fully set. Do not wet your lashes during this time. You can read more about my classic lash extensions in Vancouver, WA.
If your lashes get wet by accident, do not rub them. Let them air dry, then gently brush them back into place with your lash brush.
After that you can wash them as usual with the gentle routine below.

Your Daily Routine: Washing Your Lash Extensions

Soft hybrid lash extensions by Julia, Vancouver WA

Wash your lashes regularly with a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser. Washing does not harm your extensions. Skin oil that builds up at the base of your lashes is what causes problems, because it weakens the bond.
After washing, do not dry your lashes with a fluffy towel, because the fibers catch on the extensions. Then gently brush your lashes with the lash brush I give you. You can also use it to correct the direction of your lashes if they get out of place.
Lighter sets are easier to care for, and I always match the thickness and length of the extensions to your natural lash. If you like a natural look with extra fullness, see my hybrid lash extensions in Vancouver, WA.

What to Avoid So Your Set Lasts

Avoid any fats and oils on your lashes. Mascara contains oils, so I do not recommend it. Cleansers with oils, oil-based makeup removers, and oils or creams applied close to the lash line on your eyelids are not recommended either. Choose oil-free products.

Do not pick, pull or rub your lashes, and never use an eyelash curler on them. Picking can pull out your natural lash together with the extension. For how often to come in, I recommend a refill every 2 to 3 weeks, and no later than 3 weeks.
